Dorrian Green Park is a Hidden GEM Downtown

Did you know that there’s a super cool park right in front of COSI that you might not have even known existed? It’s called Dorrian Green, and it’s hiding in plain sight next to Columbus’ Center of Science and Industry. You see, it’s built right on top of a huge underground parking garage with 620 spaces, which is perfect for all the visitors coming to check out COSI or the new National Veterans Memorial and Museum right across West Broad Street.

Now, if you’ve been to COSI before, you might have noticed the park, but let’s be real, sometimes we’re in such a hurry to get inside that we don’t even look around. Or, after a whole day of exploring COSI, we’re just ready to head home. But trust me, Dorrian Green is totally worth checking out! You can make it part of your day at COSI or just head over there on its own.

Bonus: There are plenty of picnic tables and green space, so it’s the perfect spot to pack a lunch and enjoy the outdoors. It’s like a little hidden oasis right in the middle of downtown, and you won’t want to miss it!

The park is perfect for both children and adults, making it an ideal spot for people of all ages.

  • Really neat playground that has two different areas, one geared towards 2-5 and one towards 6-12
  • Two regular swings, two infant swings and fun circle swing
  • Great climbing features
  • Butterfly and Pollinator Garden
  • Sensory Garden
  • Prairie Garden consisting of plants native to central Ohio
  • Reading Garden
  • The Fountain Plaza is anchored by an interactive fountain and flanked by two open-air pavilions and flowering cherry tree groves.
  • The northwest and southwest entrances feature salvaged limestone structures from the historic Central High School Stadium that once occupied the site, and the relocation of a kinetic sculpture titled “The Spectrum Tree”, celebrates Isaac Newton’s discovery that sunlight contains the entire spectrum of colors.
  • Fun bench swings similar to those located over on the Scioto Mile
  • Tons of picnic tables

Who is Dorrian Green you ask?

Dorrian Green is named in honor of Franklinton native Hugh J. Dorrian, a dedicated and unwavering public servant to the residents of Columbus for 52 years. Mr. Dorrian served as the cityโ€™s fiscal guardian from 1966 through 2017, first as Columbus City Treasurer and then as Columbus City Auditor. He had a strong hand in the revitalization of the Short North and other downtown neighborhoods, the Arena District, University District, Scioto Mile and Franklinton. Mr. Dorrian, a graduate of St. Charles High School, had a seat at the table for every major decision made on behalf of the residents of Columbus for more than half a century, ensuring that Columbus continued to thrive and grow into the vibrant city it is today. Parks have always been a bright memory for Mr. Dorrian, as he spent many years playing at Sunshine Park, which is now warmly known as Dodge Park. Dorrian Green is nestled on the grounds of the former Central High School, which served as a bedrock for community gatherings. Our hope is for Dorrian Green to serve as a wonderful mainstay for Columbus residents and visitors for generations. The dedication will highlight Mr. Dorrianโ€™s commitment to building communities where everyone is welcome and has the opportunity to thrive.

Parking: Yhere are on-street spots available, but I recommend using the underground garage located directly in front of COSI. Once you exit the garage, you’ll find yourself inside the park, making it a convenient option for visiting. It doesn’t get any easier than that!
