As the temperatures dip and winter settles in, you might assume it’s time to hibernate indoors. But that’s not the case! Winter is a fantastic season to explore the beauty of our Metro Parks. Not only does the scenery change dramatically, but our Metro Parks has made it even more exciting with twinkling lights, cozy treats, and fun hiking challenges perfect for the whole family.

Winter Hike Kick-Off Event
Start your winter hiking adventure at the Winter Hike Kick-Off Event on December 1, 2024, from 5–7 PM at Highbanks Metro Park. It’s the perfect opportunity to enjoy hot chocolate and embark on a scenic walk under the park’s twinkling lights. It’s an experience that captures the magic of the season, and a great way to introduce the family to the winter hiking challenge. A Winter Wonderland: Walk Under Twinkling Lights
Throughout December, Metro Parks will light up the night with stunning displays at several parks. Walk through Battelle Darby Creek, Blacklick Woods, Highbanks, Homestead, and Inniswood parks, all beautifully illuminated from dusk until 8 PM. It’s a great way to make memories with your loved ones as you stroll under the stars and lights.
For a special treat, head to Chestnut Ridge Park on December 6th and 7th for evening lantern walks with hot chocolate, available from 5 to 6:30 PM. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a winter evening surrounded by nature’s beauty.
January & February: Warm Up With Hikes and Hot Treats
After the holiday season, continue your outdoor adventure with the Winter Hike challenge throughout January and February. In January, hike any trail at Clear Creek, Prairie Oaks, Rocky Fork, Scioto Audubon, Scioto Grove, Sharon Woods, Slate Run, and Walnut Woods parks. Enjoy complimentary refreshments during the scheduled times—perfect for refueling and warming up after a chilly winter walk.

In February, the Winter Hike continues at Blendon Woods, Glacier Ridge, Pickerington Ponds, Quarry Trails, and Three Creeks. Make your way through your favorite trails and stop for hot drinks and treats to keep everyone energized as you take in the winter landscape.

Earn Your Winter Hike Patch
The Winter Hike challenge is more than just a fun winter activity. It’s a way to get outside, explore new parks, and earn rewards along the way. Here’s how it works:
- Visit the featured parks during the designated month.
- Hike any trail at the park and get your Winter Hike card stamped by a staff member.
- Hike 7 parks to earn your Winter Hike patch.
- Join the Winter Hike Celebration on February 23, 2025, to receive your new patch in person!
But the adventure doesn’t end there! If you’re up for an even bigger challenge, you can earn additional hike medallions and swag by hiking all 19 Metro Parks. For more details on how to collect these rewards, visit Friends of Metro Parks.

Winter Hike Celebration
After completing your hikes, join the Winter Hike Celebration at Blacklick Woods Golf Course on February 23, 2025, from 11 AM–3 PM. This family-friendly event will feature a beautiful hike along the Audubon Sanctuary Golf Course, where you can collect your earned Winter Hike patch, enjoy hot chocolate by a warm fire, and celebrate your outdoor achievements with fellow hikers.

Winter hikes can be a refreshing and invigorating experience, but preparation is key. Here are a few tips to make your hike more enjoyable:
- Dress in Layers: Temperatures can fluctuate, so wearing layers will help you stay comfortable and warm.
