Step Back in Time at Slate Run Living Historical Farm: A Journey Through 1880s Ohio Farm Life

Just a short drive from Columbus, the time has been turned back to the 1880s at Slate Run Living Historical Farm. As you stroll through the gardens, barns, and farmhouse, you will experience first-hand what life was like on an Ohio farm.

As you stroll from the parking lot to the farm, your first sight is the gothic revival farmhouse, constructed in 1856 and meticulously restored by Metro Parks to maintain its authenticity. Dressed in 1880s attire, the farm’s dedicated staff and volunteers carry out their daily chores. Step inside to explore the living room, parlor, and kitchen, where you might catch a glimpse of someone preparing a meal or preserving garden produce through canning.

They also have a fun obstacle course out front of the house. Boxes to weave around, a beam to climb on, a sheet to climb under and more.

After your exploration of the house and garden, a brief stroll leads you to the multi-bay barn. Constructed by Samuel Oman, the fourth owner of Slate Run Farm, and meticulously restored by Amish carpenters, this historic structure awaits your discovery. While direct interaction with the animals is not available at the moment, feel free to wander through the barn and grounds at your leisure. Encounter a variety of creatures, including pigs, geese, turkeys, majestic Percheron horses, and other cherished heirloom animals along the way.

After all of your exploring, you’re probably gong to be hungry. Make sure to pack a picnic because they have a TON of great picnic spots.

When you drive into the park, you turn left to go to the farm. Don’t worry; there are signs that you can’t miss. Once you’re done exploring the farm, head back to the main road, turn left and go straight back. This will lead you back to Slate Run Metro Park. It might feel like you’re driving forever, but your journey will not be without reward. There are multiple picnic areas, a super fun playground for all ages, restrooms and a 14-acre lake with two childrenโ€™s fishing docks and lakeside boardwalk. You can find all of it in Buzzardโ€™s Roost Picnic Area.

This playground is great for kids who love to climb. There are two main play structures, one for younger kids and one for older kids. It is mostly rope type climbing. Both have slides and both you have to climb to get to them. They do have a smaller toddler play structure across the pathway. It is pretty old, but still fun!
