Understanding Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a 7-day celebration that honors community, family and heritage of African American culture and African traditions. The name comes from the Swahili word for “first harvest” and is rooted in the Nguzo Saba, the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa:

  • Umoja (Unity)
  • Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
  • Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
  • Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
  • Nia (Purpose)
  • Kuumba (Creativity)
  • Imani (Faith)

Special Highlight: Student Ornament Display

This year, the Ohio History Center is featuring a unique display of Kwanzaa ornaments created by students from 5th to 12th grades across Central Ohio schools. Here’s how you can get involved:

  1. Pick Up Kits: Take-home ornament kits are available every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at the Ohio History Center until December 13.
  2. Create Your Ornament: Let your creativity shine by designing your own Kwanzaa ornament.
  3. Submit Your Ornament: Drop off your finished ornament by 5 p.m. on December 21 to Valerie Boyer at the Ohio History Center.
  4. Win and Be Recognized: The winning ornament will be showcased and celebrated during the Kwanzaa festivities!
