20 + things to do with your kids on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

School is out on Monday, leaving a lot of you questioning what to do with the kids! From celebrations to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to businesses opening on typically closed days to discounts on admissions to free events at places like our metro parks – – you are bound to find something to do!

MLK Day Open House Celebration at King Arts Complex: The King Arts Complex presents their annual MLK Open House on the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. Join them as they explore the impact of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. This annual community event is an excellent opportunity for children, families, and friends to enjoy musical and live theatrical performances. It is also a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to learn about the civil rights movement, participate in art activities, view the art exhibition, and meet new friends.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at National Veterans Memorial and Museum: Join them on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to learn about the power of service to others and the ways that it can strengthen communities, create solutions, and bridge barriers. Enjoy one free child admission with each adult admission.

Celebrate MLK Jr. Day: Parent/Child Book Discussion. Hosted by Delaware County District Library: Come to the library for a reading of the book “Martin Luther King Jr. A Peaceful Leader,” discuss the book together, and participate in activities around the library.

Request or pick up a copy of the book Martin Luther King Jr.: A Peaceful Leader by Sarah Albee, read it, discuss together, and then join a librarian at the Orange Branch Library for a special program where we will read aloud the book, discuss together, & participate in activities around the library honoring Dr. King. This program is recommended for children ages 6 & up and their families.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at the Ohio History Center: Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with themed programming as they are opening the museum for special hours. Check the website for a list of events. Museum will be open 10AM – 5 PM.

Free Columbus Zoo Admission : Visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium on Monday, Jan. 20 and receive free admission in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day! They are open from 10 AM to 4 PM. Plan your visit: ColumbusZoo.org

COSI is typically closed on Monday, however, they will be open 10 AM – 5 PM.

Fun in the Jungle will be open 9 AM – 8 PM. $2.50/2 and under

MLK Day Camp at  Integrity Athletics: This is a half day camp where your child can explore our entire facility doing a variety of athletic activities, games and more! This camp will be guided by our enthusiastic instructors giving your child a fun experience! A pizza lunch will be provided to every camper. If your child has food restrictions please send them with a sack lunch or snacks. Cost: $45 & $35 for siblings. Time: 9:00am- 1:00pm. School’s Out Open House at  Glass Axis: Classes are walk-in only and for kids 18 and younger! Groups will start at the beginning of each hour for classes and fill on a first come, first serve basis. Open House is Monday January 20th from 11am-4pm. Therefore classes will begin at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, & 3pm. They suggest checking in 30mins prior to each hour to ensure your spot. Classes are: Small Sculpted Glass Paperweight(Ages 9+) $20 and Small Fused Glass Plate (ages 6+) $20

Mini Makers Snowman Workshop at Taranto’s Pizzeria at Polaris: Head to Taranto’s Pizza at 10:00 am for a fun snowman craft. Suitable for all ages! Each participant will receive a blank wood board to turn into their own unique snowman creation! Boards are 5.5”W and range in height from 11-14”. Paint a wood hat and brim or choose a fleece stocking cap! Add a scarf, buttons, felt or wood decorations! Create your face using buttons, decals or paint! There will be so many FUN options – your SNOWMAN will be a one-of-a kind creation!

COSI Workshop: Animal Tales at  Granville Public Library: In this wild hands-on program encounter habitats, adaptations, and the science behind what all living things need. Registration required and limited to 30 children with an accompanying adult (no more than 2 kids per adult) Designed for preschool- 2nd grade. Please register at Granvillelibrary.org/calendar

One Day Kids Art Camp at The Party Studio: Bring your little Picasso for our One Day Art Camp to create their own works of Art on Canvas and Crafts! 10am Drop Off – 1pm Pick Up. Light Snack and Juice available! Dress to Mess! Suitable for ages 5-12

Natural Play Area Adventures: Fort Building at Sharon Woods Metro Park : Build a fort using natural materials found off-trail. Meet at the Natural Play Area at 1 PM.

Young Explorers: Frosty Scavenger Hunt at Homestead Metro Park: Enjoy a winter scavenger hunt and win a prize. Recommended for ages 5-12. Meet at the Nature Center at 12 PM.

Critter Scene Investigation : Be a science investigator and use evidence to solve wildlife mysteries. Meant for older school age children but younger kids can participate with help from parents or older siblings. Meets at Crooked Alley KidSpace, 630 Wirt Rd, Groveport
