Fun Spots for 1/2-1/8

Happy New Year! 2017 is finally here, can you believe it? If one of your resolutions is to get out and explore more, keep an eye out for my weekly ‘fun spot’ posts. In 2016, I did a terrible job with keeping up with them! SORRY! One of my resolutions for 2017 is to keep up with the weekly event posts.

Monday, January 2

50 First Jokes – Fifty comics will debut their first joke of the New Year at Late Night Slice! Featuring several local talents as well as comedians joining us from Toledo, Cincinatti and Cleveland! It’s gonna be a big show so get there early to catch all of it! All ticket sales will go towards the 2017 Whiskey Bear Comedy Festival, which you can find out more about at the show!

Marvel/DC Movie Trivia – Big Head Trivia gives you the chance to show off your  Marvel/DC movie trivia, wine some prizes and drink some beers at Village Idiot.

Tuesday, January 3

Paint Your Pet  – Enjoy a cocktail and paint your favorite furry friend at Park Street Cantina in the heart of Downtown Columbus! If you’re wondering how it works, all you do is purchase your ticket and post a photo of your pet to this facebook event page. Using the photo, they will create a template – which will be ready for you when you arrive at the event. Advance Registration Required. Tickets at:

Trivia Tuesday at Zauber Brewing – Head to Zauber (one of my favorite bars) in Grandview for their trivia night. If you are participating, you get happy hour prices – how awesome is that!

Latin Dancing Tuesdays at Arepazo – From 7-8pm they will offer  Salsa, Bachat and Kizomba lessons. Special guest, Shalon Wheeler, will be teaching Kizomba for the month of January. After lessons, they will have open dance until close. Make sure you get there by 7 for happy hour food and drink specials.

Wednesday, January 4

Boogie & Blues at Natalie’s! – Lil’ Red & The Rooster are joined by award winning boogie pianist Ricky Nye from Cincy and the groovey Dwight Cartier on bass for a special night. Touching and refreshing with a bit of humor, their originals and covers include traditional electric blues, Jump, Boogie, Rag, Rhythm & Blues and a touch of old school Jazz. Vintage blues with lyrics and interpretations that speak to today. They’re warm and inviting and their music is inspired and innovative. Blues with a spirit full of hope and joy may inspire you to get up and boogie! The cost is $10. Reservations are recommended. Get there early and enjoy their delicious, coal-fired pizza.

BYOB (Bring You Own Baby) to the Bar – Studio 35 Cinema & Drafthouse monthy event allows you to bring your kiddo to the bar and have a beer or two.  They offer $4.00 pints of Columbus IPA.

Singo! – Hadleys Bar and Kitchen puts their own spin on Bingo by adding singing to it! If you haven’t tried this musical version of bingo, you’re going to love it. It starts at 8. While you’re there, make sure you order the grilled cheese!

Arm Knitting Scarves with Studio614 – Head to Le Meridien for a fun filled night with Studi0 614. This is a 2-hour arm knitting class, and everyone will go home with their own, homemade infinity scarf. No experience is necessary, and they’ll walk you through the steps together. They use premium bulky yarn for the highest quality, extra soft scarves. All of the supplies are included with artist instruction! A specialty beverage menu will be available at Soul Bar for guests of the event. Thursday Pasta Night! – Camelot Cellars is introducing their weekly Thursday Pasta Night this week! Every Thursday from 5-7pm, your ticket will get you a fresh, house-made dinner for two from Borgata Pizza Cafe, voted the #1 Italian Restaurant in Columbus! New Year’s Sip & Spa – Head to The Hills Market Downtown to celebrate the first $15 Friday of the new year. For $15, you get drink tickets to taste ten wines, beers, or cocktails, and have access to unlimited appetizers! The theme is Sip & Spa. It’s right after the new year, so the time will be right for some pampering! In addition to the usual assortment of food and drink, this tasting will have local health and beauty vendors for you to mix and mingle with! Mukha Spa will be providing mini makeovers with their custom-blended cosmetics, and The Tart Peach will be there with tons of new, sassy shades of perfectly pigmented and moisturizing lipsticks. Nurtur the Salon will have chair massages available for you while you sip! And local purveyor of all-natural, great-for-your-skin soaps and moisturizers Michels Medicinals has signed on to sample her wares, as well. 

Wedding Showcase – Did you get engaged over the holidays? Well, congrats! At this event,  you can enjoy an elegant evening at central Ohio’s premier wedding venue – Franklin Park Conseratory. Meet vendors representing the best of the wedding industry, taste cuisine from the Conservatory’s preferred caterers, sample premium wine selections and enjoy a bubbly bar, all while viewing the Conservatory’s distinctive rental spaces decorated for the event.

RV and Boat Show – The largest and longest running show of its kind in Ohio will open for the 37th year! The show continues through the 15th of January (see website for hours) The RV industry and the boating industry have show incredible growth inn recent years and shows no sign of slowing down! Join us forn this spectacular event where proceeds from each ticket sale benefits the Ohio Wildlife Center! Tickets are $12 plus, you can get discount coupons for $2 off adult admission!

Wine Your Art Out: Snuggly Snowman – BYOB and join us for an evening of entertaining art instruction. You’ll go home with a handmade painting (that you’ll want to display) and conceivably, find a talent you’ll crave to explore. Want to know the best part? Bring your favorite drink to sip while you dabble. Cheers to that! Doors open at 7, painting begins at 7:30. We’ll wrap up around 9 or 9:30. We’ll provide smocks, cups, corkscrews and all the art stuff. $35 per person.

Saturday, January 7

2017 Winter Hike Series – During January and February, there will be hikes at 13 different Metro Park locations each weekend. If you complete all 13 hikes, plus sign up to be a Friend of the Metro Parks – you will receive an official Metro Parks walking stick! Complete 7 hikes to earn the 2017 Winter Hikes patch.

Free Winery Tour – Grab a glass of wine and join Wyandotte Winery on a fun, informative tour of the first and oldest winery in central Ohio! During the tour you will learn about the history of Wyandotte and about the process of making wine. The tour lasts about an hour, and please be aware there are steps down to the wine cellar. Informative, educational, and fun! Afterwards stay for lunch and a wine tasting, or enjoy a bottle of wine! The tour is free, but reservations are required in advance due to limited space. Tea Blending for Wellness – What better way to fight off the cold weather than to brew up a nice hot cuppa. In this class, we will explore the characteristics of a selection of herbs, dried and fresh, and how to mix them to make a magical pot of tea!

Ohio Lantern Festival – Today is the VERY last day of the Ohio Chinese Lantern Festival which includes beautiful Chinese lanterns, performances, and food. Make sure you buy your tickets online to avoid waiting in line. Also, make sure to bring cash for parking and food.

Toast & Jams – Bodega has a new brunch party for 2017. They have a new menu paired with music by locak DJ – Patrick Hicks. Watch you – they say this isn’t your Grandmas brunch. 😉

Columbus Museum of Art – Did you know every Sunday the art museum is free for the entire family?

Family Treasure Hunt – Head to the nature center at Blendon Woods  for a fun treasure hunt. You will follow clues on a map to discover hidden treasure. What could it be??
