PBJ & Jazz

As a parent, I feel like I am pretty laid back when it comes to a lot of things. We follow a pretty loose schedule, which people think I am crazy for seeing that we have triplets. Most days, we just go with the flow and sometimes we let them nap in the car and at night, rock the girls to sleep. I let them explore all the things, even if it takes 10x as long to clean it up. The list could go on and on of things I should be more “strict” on or things I should/shouldn’t do more often….” In the end, we’re all just winging it anyways and what works for me, might not work for you and vice versa.

However, with that being said, there are a few things that I am pretty persistent on. One of those things being early exposure to music. I feel it is such a important part of a child’s development. It plays a role in social-emotional skills, motor skills, language skills, inspires creativity and so much more. Plus, how cute is it watching a 14 month old dance to your favorite song growing up? #priceless

One of the reasons I feel so fortunate to live in Columbus is because we have such a great local music scene and are given so many opportunities to be a part of it. Whether its The Shazzbots playing at the Peggy R. McConnell Arts Center or George Barrie Band at Goodale Park Music Series or even a full weekend of outstanding musicians at ComFEST – – there are consistently family-friendly concerts and events being held around the city.

Over the weekend, we took the girls to a fantastic music series
called PBJ & Jazz.

PBJ & Jazz concerts are 1-hour long interactive concerts designed to introduce jazz and American music to young children and their families. Featuring some of Columbusโ€™ finest musicians and ensembles, PBJ & Jazz concerts are hosted by former Columbus Music Hall owner and retired music educator Rebecca Ogden and are a great introduction to live music for the youngest audience member.

During the winter months, PBJ & Jazz takes place on the second-floor ballroom at the historic Lincoln Theatre –  a landmark in African-American and jazz history.

(Make sure you check out their website to read the full history on the theatre.)

When you walk in (you will see a sign for the entrance), you have the option of taking stairs or an elevator. Once upstairs, you check in at the front desk. Once checked in, you will find rows of seats for you to sit in. You will also see that there is quite a bit of space in the center aisle, as well as up front near the musicians. The reason is, this event is made to be interactive. The kids are encouraged to get up and dance, as the musicians are very engaging with the kids.

Not pictured, but important to point out as it’s a part of the event name — there are PB & J sandwiches, cookies and juice available. The sandwiches were cut in triangles, making them easy for little hands to hold. This is included in with your ticket price.

The girls had an absolute blast. This performance was by Sydney McSweeny, a “rising vocal sensation who takes a fresh approach to jazz with her wide-ranging voice and one-of-a-kind style.” In the event description, they mentioned her having the ability to inspire audiences of all ages. I would have to say I agree 100%. Not only were the girls engaged with their eyes locked in on her, watching how she was singing and dancing – the adults in the audience, including myself, were too. She captivated everyone with her genuine demeanor and beautiful voice.

This is one of my absolute favorite songs. The perfect way to end the morning.

I highly recommend taking your family to the next performance. There is ONE show left before they take a break until the summer series starts. The summer series starts in June and will take place at the Topiary Park. The great thing about the summer series is — IT IS FREE!! I can not wait for picnics in the park, while listening to some of the best musicians in Columbus.

Next Show: March 21st
Waves de Ache (Cuban music with funk and jazz) will be performing.

Last thing, if you’re hesitant to take your kids out to an event like this, don’t be! I have three rambunctious toddlers who love to explore all the things. This is a great environment for that. As I mentioned, the artists are very engaging and its such a laid back environment. Just music, fun and kids being kids in a supportive environment.

Hope to see you there next time!
