Did you know July is National Ice Cream Month? With more than 2,200 dairy farms and hundreds of Ice Cream shops each with its own flavor for creativity, Ohio has more than enough ways to celebrate.
Check out the Ohio. Find it Here. Ice Cream Trail for an A to Z list of shops around Ohio.
One of our favorite places to visit in Ohio, Young’s Dairy Farm just happens to be home to our FAVORITE ice cream – making it the perfect spot to kick of National Ice Cream Month. Not only do they have homemade ice cream, but they are also a working dairy farm – where you can watch the ice cream being made and get up close with cows and other farm animals. Plus, they provide an entire day of fun for the family with miniature golf courses, a driving range, a fun barrel ride around the farm, slides, and more.
An entire day of family fun-based around ice cream, perfect for all ages? Yes, please!
What to do on your visit to Young’s?
Visit The Dairy Store
This is where they serve homemade ice cream along with breakfast, lunch & dinner seven days a week. We ALWAYS get our ice cream first, followed by cheese curds, fries, and sometimes a burger.
The ice cream is amazing. It has a smooth and creamy texture and is rich with flavor. Speaking of flavors, they make about 60 flavors of ice cream at some point each year and another 30+ flavors of gelato. They make all of their ice cream on the farm in the original dairy store – the white building located near Route 68 attached to the red barn. If you walk over, you can watch them make the ice cream through the window.
Fun Fact: The window where you watch them make the ice cream is the original spot where people would pick up their milk years and years ago.
Their best-selling seasonal flavor is Pumpkin, available September-November each year. See a list of their flavors + ingredients here.
My FAVORITE thing to order is the Buckeye Sundae. One scoop chocolate peanut butter and one scoop peanut butter cup ice cream topped with hot fudge and peanut butter sauce, real whipped cream, Reese® pieces, and Young’s homemade buckeye. My, oh my. It is heavenly.
Mark your calendars for July 19 – 25! It is their annual Young’s Homemade Ice Cream Pint Sale. You can bring home pints of ice cream for $2.69 each, while supplies last. This is the ONLY time their pints are on sale and while they have several thousand, they go fast.
Sometimes you just need a banana split. Make sure you add hot fudge to it.
The cheese curds are made using their Farmstead Cheese, which is made 100% with their Jersey cow milk. We typically order them plain and get sides of buffalo and sweet chili to dip them in – creates the perfect bite.
There are several places to enjoy your food and ice cream. You can eat indoors, out front of the dairy store on a covered patio, to the side of the dairy store, or back to the right, where they have picnic tables covered by trees.
Explore their working Dairy Farm
Pet and feed their very friendly goats, go inside the public area of the barn and get up close to baby cows, pigs, more goats, and even get a chance to watch them milk the cows daily! That typically happens between 4:30 PM and 5:30 PM. Most days, the person doing the milking is a Young family member – and are always happy to answer any questions you might have.
Make sure you grab a cup of goat food because they’re going to be looking for it. Cups of goat food are available in the Dairy Store Farmstead Cheese Shop or you can buy handfuls from the machines near the goats outside.
Have fun at Udders & Putters
Behind The Dairy Store is where you’ll find all of the wonderful activities they offer. There is something for all ages.
- Two miniature golf courses
- Batting cages with hardball and softball machines
- Covered and natural grass tee driving range
- Moovers & Shakers
- Cowvin’s Fast Slide
- Cowvin’s Kiddie Corral
For reference, the girls are two and under 42″. While they couldn’t participate in everything, they were able to do so much. They loved the kiddie corral and the unlimited rides on Moovers & Shakers. The cost was under $10 for all three. If you have older kids, they have an amazing Family Fun Wristband option that gives you a great value to experience everything they have to offer. You can purchase special three or five-tab wristbands instead of buying separate activities one at a time. You choose three or five activities, depending on what you want to do and how much time you have. Get more details on that here.
I love that the kiddie corral is covered all year round. It gives you a great break from the sun.
Cowvin’s Fast Slide is a three-lane slide that you can find between the batting cages and the driving range.
In 1993, they added the first activity at Udders & Putters – an 18 hole, farm theme miniature golf course. It was so popular that in 2000 they built a new 18 hole miniature golf course. Their courses are open year-round, even in the snow, each filled with its own challenges and themes.
Young’s Jersey Dairy is the perfect day trip to celebrate your love for ice cream!
Oh, and by the way, look what is coming soon ……
A brand NEW Dairy Store. It is about two and a half times bigger than the existing store in total square feet. It will seat over 200 people inside and another 200 outside on the ‘Cow Patio.’ You’ll even get a chance to watch cheese and ice cream being made inside. I recently saw on Instagram they put up a 20-foot ice cream cone on the wall! There is even going to be a spot to have birthday parties and meetings.
It is going to be scoop-tacular!
