Discovering Ohio’s Natural Beauty: A Family Adventure at Great Seal State Park

Looking for a new adventure that’s both outdoorsy and historically significant? Great Seal State Park, just north of Chillicothe, is the perfect place to explore the beauty and culture of Ohio.

Once home to the Shawnee, this park is steeped in rich history and fascinating stories. And with over 23 miles of challenging trails that lead to breathtaking scenic views of the valley below, you’ll be transported to another world. There’s something for everyone at Great Seal State Park, from hiking and mountain biking to horseback riding and even a fitness trail. And when you’re ready to relax, the park’s 1,682 acres offer plenty of options, including disc golf, camping, and reservable shelter houses. So come discover the magic of Great Seal State Park!

Fun Fact: The park takes its name from the state emblem, “The Great Seal of the State of Ohio,” which depicts Ohio’s agricultural prowess through a sheaf of wheat and its status as the 17th state in the Union through a bundle of 17 arrows. The mountains and rising sun symbolize Ohio’s early settlement west of the Alleghenies, while the Scioto River flows between Mount Logan and cultivated fields in the foreground. The Great Seal’s design is believed to have been a collaborative effort among Thomas Worthington, the “Father of Ohio Statehood,” Edward Tiffin, the first governor, and William Creighton, the first secretary of state. They drew inspiration from the sun rising over Mt. Logan and the surrounding hills, the same picturesque scenery that now comprises Great Seal State Park.

While some of the trails at Great Seal State Park may be more suitable for experienced hikers and cyclists, we still thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful drive through the park. However, families with children will not want to miss out on the amazing Storybook Trail, which is kid-friendly and leads to a fun playground area!

Located near the parking lot of the Ireland picnic shelter, is where you can find the trailhead for the Storybook Trail. The presentation along the trail changes with the seasons and offers a Free Little Library at the start, where you can take a book home or leave one for others.ย

As you explore the trail, you’ll encounter a whimsical storybook that changes with the seasons, plus a Free Little Library where you can pick up a book or leave one for someone else. Just be warned – the trail isn’t entirely stroller-friendly, so you might want to leave the wheels behind for this one.

But trust us, it’s worth it! Why? Because at the end of the trail, you’ll discover a playground that’s bursting with fun! Think climbing structures, tons of slides, swings, and all sorts of other fun stuff. The girls absolutely loved it, and we’re sure your kids will too!

In total, the park offers over 23 miles of trails for hikers, with terrain that varies from steep to gently rolling. It’s important for both hikers and equestrians to be in good physical condition to tackle the trails. Additionally, 17 miles of multiple-use trails are open to mountain bikers and horseback riders, but these trails are best suited for advanced cyclists due to the mostly wooded, hilly terrain that includes steep inclines and ravines.

Not only is Great Seal State Park a stunning natural wonderland, but it also has a special spot that pays tribute to those we’ve lost during the pandemic – the COVID-19 Pandemic State Memorial Grove. This peaceful area features native Ohio trees and a serene walkway for visitors to reflect and remember. It’s a place where we can honor the brave frontline workers, recognize the selflessness of Ohioans in slowing the spread, and find solace for ourselves and our loved ones who have passed. With 15 newly planted trees and benches on the way, it’s the perfect spot to take a moment and pay your respects.

Thinking of visiting Great Seal State Park? Stay overnight at their campground, which offers primitive sites and equestrian amenities. You’ll enjoy stunning views of the Scioto Valley and Sugarloaf Mountain, and your pets are welcome too! Reserve your spot online or by phone. Plus, disc golf enthusiasts will love the 18-hole course at the Ireland picnic area, which is free to play but requires you to bring your own equipment. And for a break, take advantage of the park’s three scenic picnic areas with tables and grills.
